As reported to me by Liz Mitchell :
Karen had been a close friend since 9th grade at Byrd when our family moved back to Tulsa. Karen had many academic accomplishments and was currently working at Washington University in St. Louis as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Administration and Strategic Partnerships. Through the years I've been blessed to spend time with Karen and her husband Bill. The three of us had birthdays within a range of 9 days of each other so sometimes we got to celebrate them together. We had a couple of great visits this summer. I knew her to be warm, sensitive, light hearted and also very thoughtful, insightful and compassionate. Very sadly Karen was quickly overtaken by a very aggressive cancer and died last Thursday two weeks after her diagnosis. Her family and friends are in shock and grieving her loss. Your prayers are very appreciated.

The news of Karen's sudden passing came as a shock. She and I had corresponded a few years ago about various things - academic careers, politics, writing - and it was such a joy to reconnect. I remember even way back at Memorial, Karen always impressed me as one of those quietly witty, wise-beyond-their-years people who watch and listen and reflect rather than trying to constantly fill the room with their own voice. I'm sure her colleagues benefitted from Karen's creativity and talent, and I am so sorry for them and her family for their loss. May her memory be for a blessing.

Thank you for publishing the Washington University obituary for Karen. I always enjoyed her quiet insightfulness and witticism whenever we interacted in high school...thoughtful discussions in Honors English, laughs over a silly skit that she, Liz Mitchell, and I devised for Sociology... Then, being an alum of Wash U, I took my daughter to a prospective freshman event there a few years ago, and had the pleasure of meeting up with Karen at a campus cafe. I'm so glad I had that one brief opportunity to enjoy the company, one last time, of a fellow Charger gone way too soon.
