Probably 350-400 people. I have heard HCOCT on CD, but live is a whole other dimension. Very, very good - entertaining and exciting, and, for anyone who plays music, rather humbling - they are that good!
They played for about an hour, then took a break and mingled with the audience. Then, played about another hour-and-a-half, including encore, then were going to mingle again (I left after the encore - gotta work, too).
I hear that Whit (the guitarist) lives here, and that they will be playing here again, soon. They genuinely seemed to enjoy playing together. Highly recommended, and I will be there next time.
Excellent! I basically heard the same thing from another friend. Her quote was "I haven't seen that level of playing in a while ..." Hopefully next time they play it's not the first week of a new semester and I can take the next day off. Unlike you, I don't have enough self control to drag myself away from mingling. However, combining work with only 4 hours of sleep isn't a good combination.
I'll bet Hot Club Of Cowtown will be back within 6 months - they have local ties. I wouldn't be promoting them so much if I wasn't so absolutely blown-away by their last show! Also, regarding Riverfest, I know a guy who owns his own printing company, so please send the artwork to my e-mail address.
Beth -
Your profile leaves much to the imagination ...
Anyway, the Cain's is a national treasure. 25 years ago, it smelled of urine and puke. Today, it is a very nice venue. I have been to the Cain's many times, but these two concerts are memorable:
The Cramps in 1981/82 (I don't remember) - my wife and I thought we would be killed by the local punks!
1980 - It looked like about 500 of us, but the "official" count was something like 2,000 people who saw a bunch of 18-year-old Irish guys called "U2" - good show. I liked them then, but now ...
Tom - That must have been the Boy tour - their first tour of the US. Is that right? I saw them in some dive club in OKC with about 200 of my closest friends for their October tour. I think I was a junior so that would have been later than 1980. I agree - loved them then - no so much now.
You are correct. I was working at Sound Warehouse at the time. We used to get tons of free promo records. I remember the first time we heard their first album - we all really liked it. Then, we got free tickets to the Cain's show, and I swear there were only a couple of hundred people there, but I have since read that there were a couple of thousand. I do not believe it, and I was there!!!
They were all 17/18 years old, and Bono was very energetic.
I liked their first 3 albums, but really lost interest after that.
We can have a get together. We had been thinking the 1st Sat of the month but for Sept that is Labor Day weekend. I have to go to my nephews wedding reception but that is early so could still make it if some people want to go that weekend. Otherwise we can kind of see what might be better. I do know that soon Cosmo's will be moving to Brookside.
I will put a note on FB and see what people think.
Blyhte, how about the second Saturday this coming month. I'm ( as well as others I think) are probably commited Labor Day. I missed last month because of business, but all trade shows are over for the year, FINALLY!!
Tom- Some of the punks you were afraid of were probably friends of mine from TU. Not kidding. I was a straight laced little preppy and they were a little rough around the edges. We got along great when they were sober. Was supposed to go to Joan Jett with them but school got in the way. Don't know why other friends were afraid to go.
As far as my profile-the few people that remember me from high school I've kept in touch with if not directly through the grapevine.
But can you believe I've never been to Cain's? Surely the Taproom and Beehive on 6th and ... were much worse than Cain's 25-30 years ago. I did dance to the remaining Texas Cowboys(?of Bob Will's) a couple of times thanks to Getty and Texaco.
I've avoided all of the social networking things - this IS my Facebook!
You probably should go to the Cain's, if there is ever anyone there you remotely like. I used to dread going years ago, as it got quite dumpy (and, I had been there like a million times - really). But, it has been very nicely re-done.
2nd Sat for this month sounds good. Kim suggested we keep it the 1st so not to confuse people but with holiday weekend I understand. I will put note on FB also that this time only we do it the 2nd sat. Let anybody else know.
I've also avoided all social networking sites. I can't text on my phone either. So many classmates are on facebook. I didn't know this forum existed until a month ago.
Try it for a week and get rid of it if you don't like it. I was the same as you until peer pressure during the picnic. Thought I'd quit after a week.
TOM, DON'T GO TO THE DARK SIDE(apologies to Gary)!!!! This is my Facebook, too. DON'T YIELD TO THE PEER-PRESSURE. RESIST!!! Consider yourself "friended" by all your fellow Memorial '79 classmates.
Eddie...go back to the dark side LOL, and quit interferring in our recruitment efforts, it WILL come back to haunt you! By the way we need you on Facebook too!:)
