I did work with Nita and Goose. In fact, I think they will be at our gig.

I remember those Zemi machines being in our locker rooms....man could you get a seriuos "brain freeze" from those drinks....I think the flavors were pretty bad too...lime and grape, but very acidic.  Wow, good call.

Still laughing about telling my kids about "running for classes", where you ran down the hallways before your Junior and Senior years to get the class/instructor you wanted. Don't think they still do that anymore....

Making huge "human pyramids" after Football games....

Pre-Season All-City Football Tournament at Skelly Stadium....Short half-game scrimmages...on probably the worst turf ever...

And then there was the Mazeppa 7-UP uncola discount card.....

I had my first car wreck heading to an All City game before our junior year. My '77 Camaro was full of at least 8 girls, singing to the radio....I tried to park in front of the Hurricane Lounge on 11th Street.  I ended up scraping my right front fender on an old Caddy that had to be at least 10 different colors of primers/paint.  I had to place one of those "Daddy Calls" from a payphone at the stadium!!! Turned out the car belonged to some old guy who parked his car crooked on purpose to run insurance scams!!

Alan,

Wow not only do I remember that, I think my sub-conscience! How else do you explain  my reference to the Uncola card.....

Do you remember the 7up light like this.....

wish I knew where mine is today..

I honestly do not remember the voice.  But, wasn't Coach Baker's catch phrase "Grab a root and growl!"

???

Laura, Thanks for mentioning St. Michael's.  My step-dad owned it and I spent MANY nights working there!!!  Bought my very first car by that job!!  1976 Chevette.  I beat Bo Summers at the light of 51st and Yale coming home one night.  He was following me to make sure I got home safely.  Anyway, I SOOOO miss that place.  Loved working there.  Kelley

Question for you Allen: Have we set a time for the picnic or have I just missed seeing it? Thanks

That's not why he was following you home.

Well, that's what he told me.  I have really loved reading all of these memories.  Unfortunately, my memories were from a totally different Jr High, Elementary school from you all.  But I do remember the slides, Bells and Zingo, My PI Pizza.  We went sledding one time on the hill where the Sam's is now on Sheridan.  Most of my memories were of working at St. Mike's though.  I started working there when I was 13 years old on Saturday afternoons.  I'm sorry it isn't there anymore.  Wonder if dreams can come true and it can come back some day!!  I know I would go visit it just to see what it would be like.  I remember I visited once after my step-dad sold it.  I hated it.  Wasn't the same at all.

Question for you Allen: Have we set a time for the picnic or have I just missed seeing it? Thanks

I remember always getting some sort of frozen drink there...maybe like a smoothie kind of thing but maybe more like a non alocholic frozen drink. Or something. What am I thinking of Kelley? I just really remember St. Mike's having this very different vibe from anywhere else in Tulsa. I always felt like I was somewhere else. Very cool.

You're probably remembering the "Sling".  It was in a frozen beer mug and was red in color.  There were 2 others, but I can't remember what they were called right now.  I'll have to ask my brother's Pat or Mike next week.  They'll remember them.  They drank them all the time too.

Question for you Allen: Have we set a time for the picnic or have I just missed seeing it? Thanks

Hi, Kelley!

Don't know if you read my post from the other night, when my family was at St. Mike's the night they (finally?) closed?  That was really weird.

There are very few places we all agree to go to, but St. Mike's was one.  My youngest (11) liked the potato chips on the table.  The rest of us liked the food and atmosphere.

Really miss it.

Tom

I'm sorry to hear they were selling all of that stuff like that.  Wish I had some of those old beer mugs.  There were some that were actually from Germany!!  I used to get a bowl of those chips, get a bottle of the mayo and squirt it on the chip and then eat it!! HMMMM that was so good!! I think the atmosphere of the place was its biggest selling point.  I sure miss it.  Never was the same to me after my step-dad sold it.  I'm glad you all enjoyed it so much.  Lets start a survey and see how many would like to see it come back.  I'll vote first...YES!!!!

Question for you Allen: Have we set a time for the picnic or have I just missed seeing it? Thanks

We had an interesting gym class story at Nimitz. I had gym last hour and it was swim day. The coaches would lock the door to the locker room so you would have to take a shower. About half the class had finished their shower and were changing in the locker room. DeWayne McGuire called from the shower for someone to throw him some soap. Cal Canfield threw him a brand new bar. As the soap was about to enter the shower, Coach Bartlett turned the corner and got drilled in the head! He was pissed! He ordered the entire class to sit on the benches and told us no one was going home until the culprit confessed even if it took until Midnight. The bell rang signalling the end of the school day. The school busses took off leaving behind classmates. And there we sat...and sat...and sat. Finally, after what seemed like an hour, Coach Williams told us that he had seen the guy who had thrown the soap and he had five minutes to confess or he would get an additional ten swats. A few minutes later Cal owned up to the deed. Coach Bartlett grabbed him, took him into the gym and just started beating him with a paddle. All we heard was Wham! Wham! Wham! Wham! Wham! We all just sat there in stunned silence. After the beating started, Coach Williams dismissed us. As we shuffled out, he was still hitting him. It seemed like he hit him about 25-30 times! Hey Alan, today I think Coach Bartlett is buried in Cal's backyard!

I got swats from Coach Williams and Jan Barlett. (not Cal's beating though!) Worst ones at Nimitz was either Ron Wheeler or Cecil Tucker....of course my swat history went back to Carnegie with Bob Childress and Mr Constine...lol. Man they would cringe today over the corporal punishment doled out then!

I personally think it is too bad they don't have corporal punishment anymore.  Maybe more kids would behave better in school and we wouldn't be having the bully problems.  I can remember hearing the paddle swinging through the air, because the one at our school had holes in it and it whistled when swung.  I never received any swats, I was too scared to misbehave at school.  Scared of what my mom would do to me if I did!!!

Question for you Allen: Have we set a time for the picnic or have I just missed seeing it? Thanks

Shopping at Southland when it was an outdoor mall - long before Woodland Hills was built.  Ironic that they enclosed it and made it an indoor mall and now all the malls are being built as outdoor malls.  Shopping at Clarkes Good Clothes - My Mom worked there so I got many pairs of lovely polyester pants to wear to TG&Y since we had to wear "dress" pants.  Had those horrid shoes with the big soles on them - what were those things called????

Remember when The Farm was a farm - there were horses there.  Eating pizza at Ken's -right next to Taco Boy.  Guess they didn't have free refills because you had to buy a pitcher and make it last through the entire meal.  Not easy to do when you are young and have 3 sisters.  There is still a Ken's in Chandler.

When my parents bought their house, they were told there would be a park behind the house.  It was a bit of surprise when they built Byrd instead.  We could see Zingo from our house before they build the "new" wing onto Byrd.

Going to the Sears at 21st and Yale and getting picture taken with Santa.  They sold saddles.  Is it still there?

As for corporal punishment - that is insane - that isn't punishment - that is abuse...that story about Cal makes me nauseous....for God's sake - it was an accident with a bar of soap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   I was in 2nd or 3rd grade and my sister Gail was 2 years ahead of me.  We were in one of the upstairs bathrooms at Salk and started messing around with each other.  We were the only 2 in the bathroom and I ran in the stall and slammed the door.  I think she kicked at the door or something. A teacher comes in - sees her and takes her out and gives her swats. WTF????  For messing around with your sister??????   That is just plain stupidity.  Still makes me cring to think about elementary school and the kids that had to sit out in the hall and wait for the principal to walk by with the paddle.  My kids LOVE their elementary school principal and amazingly enough - he can make 700 kids behave without beating them!!!!!

I remember the tradition of going to get donuts before running for classes.  A friend of mine is a teacher at Union. They brought in a team of educators from Arkansas and they recommended they start running for classes.

Joyce, we had to hoof it.

Our sophomore and junior years we used to have bonfires  southeast of 101st & Sheridan. It seemed like we went there every Saturday night when it was cold. Randy Roberts' band, The Parking Lot Pickers,  played there quite often. Today it is a drainage ditch with a surrounding sidewalk and a few park benches.

Does anyone remember Blue Tip tennis shoes? I always got mine at Steiger's Tennis Center at 51st & Yale. They had a tennis court out back. What about PF Flyers? They were supposed to make you "run faster, jump higher".

Harold's clothing store closed recently. They had locations at The Farm and Utica Square.

PF Flyers for sure. You could get them at the Army-Navy store on Memorial. Never had blue tips but wore out many pairs of the old converse hi-tops.

Eddie.....I remember getting a pair of blue tip tennies as a reward for making safety patrol at Carnegie in 6th grade!!!  I got mine at Trippett's Shoe Store in Holiday Hills between Sipes and Verle Smith's drug store!!  I can also remember riding my bike with Christi and Jenny Myers to Verle Smith's after school and buying bags of candy at Verle Smith's!!

RE: Things Not in Tulsa Anymore

Laura, Mike Zygmunt and I were the Safety Patrol Chiefs in 6th grade. That was a lot of fun. Zyg, Matt Matthews, and I used to ride our bikes up to Verle Smith's, also. They had the best selection of candy.

I had Mr. East for science at Nimitz. One day the Tulsa Police Department sent their Drug Task Force to speak to us in Mr. East's class. They brought three suitcases full of different bongs. They had creative bongs made out of a bomb shell, a bullet casing, a pistol and a machine gun. We went to lunch and when we got back the suitcases were missing! The cops were mad! They looked everywhere but never found them. A few days later, I was standing at my locker when the guy who had the locker next to mine said, "Psst, Eddie, do you want to buy a bong ?" I looked over and he had all of the bongs in his locker! LOL. BTW, he never got caught.

Oh yeah, and Clarks fine Clothes at Southland. The store was owned by Harry Clark's Father. Harry was '77 TMHS graduate. I remember in elementary being in scouts and that was THE place to get your scout uniforms.

How about Hill Billy BBQ on 51st at Sheridan. Man they had good ribs

Eddie, they put the Zemi machine in the lockroom at Nimitz that was a big deal.

Another show I remember was the Dr. Mazeppa Pompoziodi show with Gary Busey on channel 8.  That was Gaylord Sartain as the good Dr. My guess that was when we were in 5th or 6th grade.  I think I still have the card you got if you joined the club.

I had to beg my mom for blue tips - we finally compromised and I bought 1/2 with my babysitting money.  Can't remember the name of the store - was at the east end of Southland -had a candy counter where you could buy candy in bulk.

Bought my daughter some blue tips this year - they must be popular with the kids since her first pair got stolen at the dance studio.

Thanx for starting this thread!  I think its hilarious that I had to come all the way to Tulsa before I could post here.     Anyway...

The Bowman Twin also did the 25-cent summer movies.  I remember seeing The Incredible Mr. Limpid, The First Men in the Moon, and A Man Called Flintstone there.

Does anyone else remember King's Food Host?  It was a 24-hr diner across the street and up the block from  Yale Bowl (I think).  Their signature sandwich was called the "Cheese Frenchy"...basically a deep fried cheese sandwich.

Dutch's Party Barn.  I think it was out on 91st between Memorial and Mingo.

Crystal's pizza.   Getting a canadian bacon pizza and a salad.  Did you know that Casa Bonita Enterprises owned Casa Bonita, Crystals, and Taco Buena?

The weather beacon on top of the NBT Tower downtown.

Movies, Mugs, and Munchies.  It was basically a sandwich shop that opened our Sr Year In the little strip office north of the Fontana.  They ran with that new technology called "VCR's" and were usually showing 3 or 4 movies at a time.

Not only Clarke's, but also Froug's in Southland.  Also, both Sears on 21st and the old Walgreens in Southland sold the bulk candy.

BTW, if I recall correctly, the Walgreen's in Southland was a true old-fashioned drug store that had a soda fountain in it that sold ice creams, malts, and plate lunches.

Harringtons downtown.  Not only did I get all my Cub Scout and Boy Scout uniforms there, but my very first suit.

Going to Molly Murphy's with a group to order a 'Baccus Feast'.

The old Driller Park.  I was there at the exhibition game when the bleachers collapsed.

Hamburger Haven.  It was across the street from Crazy's on Lewis just north of 71st.

Does anyone know if the polo fields are still out on the east side of Mohawk?

Kelly, your family really did provide some great memories with St Mikes.  I remember going there with Pat and Mike (Greenwood) and others of the M&G 'family' after performances.

I'm going to drive around a bit on Friday.  Maybe I'll jog some more memories.

BTW...can someone tall me which venue we're supposed to be at Friday Night and at what time?  Thanx in advance!

TTFN!

Thanks Eddie! That's right Happy Joes...I also loved My Pi Pizza and shopping at Vandevers at Southroads with my Mom. We would always go to this little cafe they had called the "golden horse" or something like that and have a chicken salad sandwich and a lime freeze! Seemed like a lot of stores had cafes or sandwich shops in them back then. I also loved Southlands outdoor mall....My Mom got her hair done at Coiffures Continental and the little attached clothing store was called Utopia, I used to think the German and Dutch people who owned and worked there were so cool! That Salon moved in later years to The Plaza and I ended up having the fortunate experience of working with Josine Haustermanns and also inheriting some of her clientele when she retired. She and her husband Hans were owners of Coiffures Continental and Utopia and it is now called Figaro's. Hans passed away recently.......Speaking of HAIR...anyone remember "Smokey" of the famous "Smokey's"?? At 71st and Yale? She always kept up many Farrah Fawcett haircuts as well as Sam Wheeler and Larry Tucker(I work with Larry now) at "Ms. of Tulsa " Salon. And what about clothing stores like EXTENSION ONE and POISON IVY?? Anyone remember CRICKET ALLEY at Woodland Hills? I used to work there when I was 15 (too young), man, that place smelled soooo good!!

The Continenal Theater on Skelly Drive is another place that is gone.  I remember one summer they played all of the planet of the apes movies back to back, they called it - GO APE - my brother and I sat thru about 6 or 7 hours of those movies.

Later in HS I remember taking Sue Hager there to see Rocky our Sophmore year.

I like Laura Crawley rode my bike up to the Fox for the Thursday movies, what I remember most was the place was filled with kids and before the movie was to start all you could see was stuff in the air, people just throwing stuff all over.  It was great.

RE: Things Not in Tulsa Anymore

The Continental Theatre was to the Southeast of I-44 & The Broken Arrow Expressway. I went there to see three James Bond movies: To Sir With Love, Dr. No, and Goldfinger. Three movies is a little bit much for an elementary school student.

When I worked at The Park Lane Theatre, we always dreaded the Thursday morning movies. We would stand on a catwalk behind the movie screen. We could see everything the kids would do. We would watch kids throw candy at the screen(pretty common). One time we watched four boys throw apples at the screen. The funniest thing we saw was a kid light a bottlerocket and throw it in the theatre! Our policy stated that if someone was misbehaving only a manager could kick them out. But on Thursday mornings we were acting Deputy Managers with full authority to expel anyone from the premises!

Hey there Jim.  Looking forward to seeing you tonight.  Hey does anyone know, the old Civic Center, is it still there or did the BOK Center replace it?  We were downtown today looking for the Jazz Center so we would know where to go Saturday night, and we drove past the BOK Center and I think that is where the old Civic Center was.  Can't wait to see everyone tonight.  Man, I forgot how hot it gets here!!  Our heat is very dry out in the Panhandle so this mugginess is really killing me!!  I'm not acclimated to it anymore.  See everyone tonight!

Question for you Allen: Have we set a time for the picnic or have I just missed seeing it? Thanks

Yes! I became quite the proficient bowler at the Sheridan Lanes, via the Bloomin' Bus! In fact my kids are still amazed how I can smoke them by breaking 100. Little do they know how I arrived at the edge I have. Many dark, smoky hours at the bowling alley.

Someone mentioned Dutch's Party Barn. My dad worked for Quik Trip for YEARS and they would always have their summer employees party at Dutch's. The mini golf course was a mess but we would bang the ball around for hours. And the pool must have had creek water in it or something...it never seemed quite right.

Lisa, I remember Extension I 'cause I worked there for a couple of years. The only guy possibly to have worked there I think. I started out as the stock boy, steaming clothes when they came in and putting them out in the store. Also just keeping track of stuff in the back room. Eventually they figured out I was pretty good on the cash register and when Christmas season came around I became the head cashier person. I think people always looked a little surprised to see a guy in there, but it was great. Once I was up on a ladder changing lightbulbs or something and all of a sudden the manager came over and made me get down off the ladder quickly. I didn't know why. After I was down I found out that, if I had been smart enough to glance around, I would have noticed that I could see right down into all the dressing rooms. Some girl freaked out when she was completely naked and looked up and there I was on the ladder. I never saw a thing.

Oh, and one food thing I remember was the deep fried mushrooms at Interurban.

Just recently, my brother and I were discussing "Little Joe Creek" which is not so little anymore. There were many ways to walk home from Carnegie, but the "creek way" was the best!  Brother built many a dam there while I tried to catch crawdads and minnows.   Mom sure didn't appreciate the wet muddy shoes however!

Ty Boydstun, Doug Cottongim, Cole Nielsen and I were fishing in Joe Creek underneath the foot bridge. We were using a seining net, just trying to catch some small perch. We let the net down, waited for a few moments and pulled the net to the surface. We noticed there were no fish in the net, but there was something else...Water Mocassins!! 3 of them! You never saw 4 boys get out of a creek any faster!

Joe Creek was a fun place for a kid to go exploring. I miss the old creek. Today, it's just a drainage ditch. I don't think the Boydstun's miss it. Their house used to flood everytime we had a good rain.
